This is an interesting Midwest version of In-n-Out with ice cream. The burgers are thin and called steakburgers but don't let that fool you. The burgers are ok but nothing to rave about.

Awesome food! The burgers are fresh, and the fries are fantastic. Great value.

Slowest service ever. Every time I've been to this location they have gotten my order wrong. They are SO dumb. It doesn't take a genius to get an ice cream order right. Make sure you check your order before you drive off.

Fair prices. Good burgers. Kid tenders is two big tenders and a pile of fries. Friendly service. For fast food I am impressed. Will definitely be back. Order your custard with the meal and have them hold it. After your meal they'll make your custard and you don't have to wait in line or pay twice.

I have to say that I am addicted to this place! I live in South Kansas City and take a nice little trip from State Line, down 135th to eat here. Like many of the other reviewers, I have gone through the drive thru and did not get the cheese I paid .40 for. Now, when I go through the drive through, I check the burger before I leave. I know its annoying when they are trying to push people through, but I don't care. I'm going to be annoyed when I drive all the way home to find out the best part of any burger is gone...the CHEESE! Anyway, the food is always good. When they say they make it to order, its no Sonic. They really do make it to order and its fantastic. I never cared for shoestring fries until this place. I love them. Winsteads have nothing on Freddy's. Another plus, is you can upgrade your regular drink to a large and its only $.20 more. Well worth it! The price is very reasonable. If I could only chose one fast food joint for a burger, it would be Freddy's.

Okay so I saw this place in front of Staples and was like, "What in the world is a Freddy's?" I kept debating on going while I was sitting at the stop light and finally turned at the last second. Came around the drive-thru and ordered my food. I was so tempted to get a Chicago style dog, but the cheeseburger looked delightful. So, I went with the cheeseburger, only there was no cheese. By the time I found out I was on my merry way. The fries were okay. I need to go back and make sure it wasn't a fluke on the mishap. Everyone deserves a 2nd chance!

Born into the realm of Steak 'N Shake, I was skeptical of this look alike. I had a steak and cheese melt that was spectacular, and now i'm won over. Did I mention how delicious the custard is?--very creamy, and not too sweet=perfection!

    (4)
  • Nancy H.

The custard, the custard! Not too sweet, super thick and creamy...but the burger was nothing to write home about. I did like the patty melt and the fries were perfectly crisp. I love matchstick fries though so I'm probably biased.

  • Brian H.

Burgers were good, but no better than any other place. Tastes a lot like culvers. Burgers are WAY over priced for a fast food joint. I would rather spend my money at burger king for a better burger for less.

Hot fresh food. Good portions. Fries are great.

    (4)
  • Susan B.

It's a clean restaurant with fast service, but the food is very average. You have to like steak burgers as thin as paper and skinny french fries. Considering all the competition for burgers and fries, I'd have to say I have had better of both! Now..quite honestly I didn't try the frozen custard yet, so I cannot write a review on it.

Very flavorful burger and I loved the skinny fries. I look forward to visiting again next time we're in KC.

Waited almost 15 minutes for 2 cups of ice cream behind another car. More cars were behind us honking. We were just stuck there. Our ice cream had been sitting there and was melted when we finally got it. We asked and the girl said they don't have spots for cars to pull up and bring them their food if something's wrong. Simple fix.

My first time trying this restaurant and I would say that the burgers are better than 5 Guys with nice crispy edges on their burgers. Not a bad price either. The fries were nicely seasoned too.

  • Matt R.

This is so unhealthily good! I need one in my town. The burgers are so much better than other fast food, and the employees are upbeat, helpful, and seem to enjoy being here. Food is cooked to order.

Freddie's. Thin hamburgers with a crispy edge served with shoestring fries and special fry sauce. What could be better than that for a weekend lunch on a humid rainy summer day in Kansas? How about adding frozen custard Sundays? Now you're talking! While you enjoy your burger, you are surrounded by photos and stories of Freddie. It's kinda odd to see all these stories without getting a full history of when and how Freddie's was founded and grown. But it still gives you that 50's and 60's drive in diner feel. The family loves to eat here. My two year old grandson even loves to come here so he can eat fries and take apart his burger in order to lick all the ketchup off the pickles. Live it. Love it. :-)

Solid fast food burger! Patties are a little on the thin side, but overall very good! Custard is excellent!

I recently moved to the are from California. I loved in & out burger. I honestly like Freddy's more! We went here yesterday. I am giving 5 stars because the food was delicious and the service was great! We will definitely be going here a lot!

  • Annette M.

I tried Freddy's steakbuger over the weekend and it was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!! It tasted so fresh cause they make everything right then and there. I really liked the fries too. They have a really good fry sauce, im not sure what it was but it was great! If you get a chance I highly recommend trying this place out!!

  • Amy C.

amazing burgers and the fries are like crack, you'll stuff your face then want more! I usually don't like shoestring fries, but these bad boys are magic. add the secret fry sauce (note to owner: PLEASE SELL THIS IN STORES) and you'll be in hog heaven! The restaurant is decorated like a classic diner, very similar to In-N-Out burger in socal. The burgers are thin, so i at least order a double burger, if not triple, which ends up being the size of a normal hamburger. The meat itself is very tender and actually tastes like beef, with no fillers! I'm in love with them. The staff is always friendly. Their custard is creamy and delicious, not as good as Sheridan's but still some of the best in the city. Go check them out if you want a great meal at an affordable price! over all rating: food - 9 atmosphere - 9 selection - 6 fabulouseatskc.com on facebook @ facebook.com/fabulouseat… on youtube @ fabulouseatskc

Thanks for coming into my life Freddy! Steak and what? Five guy what? This place is great. So great I am writing my review sitting at my table enjoying some frozen custard. Chocolate brownie delight! The burgers are not the fattest you have ever had but the seasoning, the veggies and whatever else they do to them are awesome. I am hooked. Keep up the good work Freddy :) will be back and glad to see you have a few in Texas as well

The guy announcing the order numbers for pickup in the lobby has more energy than most shock jock radio Dj's at 5am in the morning. He's on it and made me smile every time he called out a number. Freddy's makes a good burger and I love the shoestring fries. I'm sure you'll lose your order number announcer to a major radio station soon so keep those orders coming.

    (4)
  • Jen M.

The burgers are what make this place great! Personally not a big fan of the skinny fries but good fast food cooked to order. Similar to but BETTER than Steak and Shake. I'd rather have Freddie's in my area than S&S.

    (4)
  • Kenneth F.

Way overpriced for what you get. Hamburgers were too salty and shake tiny. Medium maybe 6 oz was around $4. It is a pretend Winsteads. 2 Cheesebrgers and those tiny 2 shakes were $18.COME-ON THAT IS RIDICULOUS.

    (1)
  • Tony P.

Hands down, the best California style streakburger and super thin fries around. Having custard is just a benefit on the side.

    (5)
  • Kerri B.

Burgers are dripping with grease. I went to Freddy's for the first time and had a long wait and our order was messed up. They added onions when I asked for none and our fries were cold. The food was not worth the price at all.

    (1)
  • Daryl B.

Don't bother with the patty melts. I ordered a double patty melt, and not only are the patties paper thin, my "second" patty was literally barely bigger than a quarter

  • Dawn C.

Aha! I have discovered the "In-N-Out" of the midwest, at last! The fresh steakburgers were delicious and seriously tasted like In-N-Out, which if you like that, is a wonderful find. The fries here are really skinny shoe string and have a zippy little dipping sauce. I like the old fashioned soda shop decor and family photos. We didn't try the custard as we were just too full from our meals but the pictures looked great and we will be back.

  • Paul W.

Usually I prefer my burgers thick and juicy and my fries fat and crinkly but once in a while you have to change things up. Tonight we checked out Freddy's on the recommendation of friends who came along. Everyone ordered the double combo with cheese with shoestring fries. Our service was fast and friendly and our food was ready within a couple of minutes. Burgers and fried were all hot and tasty and plentiful enough to satisfy my appetite. Burgers are served with pickle, mustard and onion, my favorite condiment combination. Even though these flat and crispy-around-the-edges hamburger patties and skinny little french fries aren't my favorites, my hat's off to Freddy's for creating a cool 50s drive-in kind of atmosphere and food that is served up exactly how they intend for it to be. Nicely done. And, the sundaes aren't bad either.

I've always been a fan of Winsteads, but after going to Freddy's I doubt I'll ever go back to Winsteads again. They have the best burger/fry combo around and it is hard to decide what to eat first. Their fries are the matchstick kind (just like Houston's) and you have to turn your hand into a claw and scoop up a handful. Always hot and crispy!!! Burgers are just as tasty. Everything is always hot and fresh and you can tell it hasn't been sitting around under a heat lamp. Also for a place that is always very busy they do a great job of keeping the place clean and the people are always friendly. Freddy's is a winner in my book and while it may not be the healthiest of fare it is a worthwhile splurge every once in awhile.

6/30/2013-Nice place. They keep the tables clean when it is busy, the help was swarming the dining area. Being from Chicago the wife and I have a soft spot for Vienna hot dogs. An even softer spot when they are on toasted Texas toast. The custard was excellent and they offer to hold the custard while you eat so you do not have to pay twice and have your custard melt while you are eating. They broke ground on a new one on NW Oldham Pkwy where Waids used to be. Yea! This is only 10 minutes from my house.

  • Alliey D.

They have good chili dogs, but everything on the menu is kindof over-priced and terribly bad for you. One of the entrees should be gastric bypass, because there are literally no options on the menu that can even marginally be considered slightly healthy. Not only that, the burgers are kindof wimpy and over-powered by grease, and the fries are dinky and yet again grease-ridden. I'm not normally picky, but they aren't that great.

Long story short: I got the same thing and it seemed better than my first time Long story long: One day when both my girlfriend and I had to go to our respective jobs, we decided to meet here for an early dinner because my work is just a couple blocks down the street and her next tutoring student was a few minutes away. It was more busy than the first time I was here, of course the first time I was here was an off peak meal time. Though it was busier, the staff seemed to have it under control. I ordered the same thing as I got last time: a California style double cheeseburger with everything. We got our food and just like the first time, it smelled great. I dug in and overall, I liked this much better than the first time. I couldn't really figure out what the difference was, but I thought it was better than the first time. My girlfriend liked it too, but she wasn't going on and on about it. We agreed it is isn't the best regret we had in town, me especially, but its respectable.

First timer. We had 3 #1's and it came up in about 5 minutes. I enjoyed the fries very much but I wasn't a fan of the burger. The fries were crunchy down to the last one. The portion was a good size. I wasn't a fan of the burger Because the patties r thin n the edges were dry n slightly burned. It could be less fat in the meat, which could be better for you if that is in fact why. Overall presentation was good and it's probably just that I'm used to a different style burger, like 5 Guys. I'll take Freddy's Fries and 5 Guys burger because 5 Guys fries r just too soggy for me.

Note: this is for the Leawood location of Roe and 107th. I am posting it here because it's showing the map location. I just received TERRRIBLE customer service at the Leawood Roe location. Really the lack of customer service is about as bad as terrible service, which is what I got. I ordered the double cheeseburger combo and a mini-chocolate shake. Once I pulled up to the window, I wasn't acknowledged for about 3 minutes until a girl came over to the register by the window and opened the window, holding my shake next to her face, and was apparently trying to figure out some issue with a mystery sale that was entered somewhere. She still didn't acknowledge me for probably another 3 minutes while she talked about the issue with a coworker, while holding her face, and my drink in her hands. When she finally did acknowledge me, she handed me my shake and my Dr. Pepper and didn't ask for my card until she verified which sale was mine. I then asked for honey mustard for dipping, which also went unacknowledged. Then a manager came over, also didn't acknowledge me and probably spent another 5 minutes discussing the issue. Then she finally got my bag of food, at which point I asked for honey mustard again, and she handed that to me with napkins and my card, not putting it in the sack with the food. Then she said, "Have a good night." Not one apology for making me wait or a thank you. I don't expect much from a fast food restaurant but from what I could tell, the issue they were having with the POS system had nothing to do with me and they should have rang me through and worried about it later. I drove up with a very pleasant demeanor and I definitely left with a scowl on my face. I worked retail and food service for a combined 8 years and it is unacceptable to make someone wait like that at the window with no apology or explanation. I would have been perfectly content if they would have acknowledged that they were inconveniencing me. Whoever was on the window at 9:20 PM on October 15th, 2013 should not be on the window. She was short with me (not rudely so, but indifferent) and ignored me, and what I assume were health standards while she held my drink, essentially, to her face. And the fact that the manager didn't speak to me either isn't a good sign. I am not giving with 1 star because the food is good but completely indifferent customer service is unacceptable when I'm ordering $10 worth of food.

Good food, terrible service, had to wait in the drive through for 15 minutes for them to give the people ahead of us their food!! Once it was our turn we still had to wait an extra 5. We'll go to a different Freddy's next time.

This is the only fast food restaurant I will eat. Reminds me a little bit of how the old Winstead's burgers used to taste...with the thin crispy patties...always served hot. Sometimes these taste a little too salty with the pickles, but this is my favorite burger in town. The drive thru line is always slow, but that is because they cook each sandwich fresh to order. Its always worth the wait. Sometimes the sandwich doesn't even make it through the first stop light which is like 100 yards away. I go 3-4 times a year max...would go more if burgers were healthy for you.

Freddie's is one of our favorite finds from when we moved close to 135th & Metcalf. It's like a Steak-n-Shake but with hot dogs and frozen custard -- I prefer Freddy's to SnS, hands down, though my husband still prefers SnS's burger. Guess it's a fine line. But here's why I'm right (and some other points that we agree on): - The burgers have more flavor and good texture! And as another reviewer pointed out, the edges are a little crispier and that could be that they use meat with less fat. I like it. - The buns are soft and tasty. I especially like the hot dog buns, which are buttered and perfectly toasted. - Speaking of hot dogs, they have real Vienna Beef dogs!! You have to love that -- not many KC places have 'em! - Fries -- shoestring, seasoned to perfection. - Custard -- concretes, sundaes, and cones! It's on par with Sheridan's.

Freddy Krueger. Their drive thru wait is SCARY! Ordered a Freddy's Single Steakburger, Freddy's Original Double, a Hot Dog and small french fry. Totaled $9.97. The wait was at least twenty minutes. The steakburgers are like a McDonald's patty that's been flattened but with less meat. The fries are shoe-string style and are pretty good. Very average fast food that's not worth the long wait. Freddy's is based in Wichita, Kansas.

Solid place to eat a burger. Check out my review for the Freddy's in Topeka. This location lacks spicy condiments and that matters to some of us.

SLOW drive thru - took 15 mins with two cars ahead of us on a Saturday at 3pm. SMALL sizes...I'm talking kid size for a small drink. And for a $3 shake it was kinda pathetic. We just went for a snack and tried the fries and shake. I loved the thin matchstick fries, nicely salted with seasoning. The shake however was almost impossible to drink it was so thick. Remember it is frozen custard so it's not a true shake. Just not what we were after at all. Overall we weren't impressed. My husband does want to try a burger there some time. But this place is not high on our list to go back to. Next time I think i'd just as well go to Chick fil A across the street.

Hands down, Freddy's Steakburgers are the best burgers in town. There is never a long-line, service is quick and friendly. The burgers are not cooked up ahead of time instead hey are made fresh and to order. Attention is given to the even the slightest of details of your meal for example, the buns are buttered and toasted, the fries are plied high, and the desserts are made fresh and to order. Next time instead of the golden arches try Freddy's, you and the kids will be delighted.

I love Freddy's!!! you can't beat greasy burgers and their skinny little fries and frozen custard. if it were healthy to eat like this more than once a month I would eat here every day. friendly people!! and I love that I can have them hold my custard til the end.

I've driven by this place for several months and today I stopped to use the drive thru to catch a quick lunch/dinner on the go. I was really impressed with how clean and well kept the exterior of the building was. There was no trash and the building was clean. The drive through menu was easy to read and there was a menu before the actual order menu so you could make up your mind about what to order before getting to the order mic and feeling rushed. I ordered an original double combo without cheese and substituted a mini chocolate shake for the soda. They serve Pepsi products. My mini chocolate shake was not that usual light brown color, you could tell this was a chocolate shake. It was rich and flavorful and served with a straw that was 1/2 inch in diameter so you can really get a mouthful of shake, not like those wimpy straws that tend to collapse under the sucking pressure. I will be back for milk shakes at this place. My burger was good - not greasy and the condiments on the burger were fresh and abundant. My onion slice was at least 1/4 inch thick, not too much mustard and ketchup. What was really wonderful was the pickle on the bun and burger. What I really enjoyed were the fries, matchstick fries, hot and crispy, and with a touch of salt. I'll be back for the fries too. It was a great dining experience on the go and I am glad that I found another option for a meal as I travel the 135th corridor.

Forget Steak and Shake, forget Winstead's. THIS is the place for a steakburger. This has become a regular lunch spot for me since I discovered it a few months ago. The burgers are always made fresh, nice and greasy (the way a burger should be), and the matchstick fries are always crunchy and excellent. The best part of it all: the price. A combo at Freddy's is no more than a McDonald's value meal - but the food is actually GOOD. From what I hear the chicken is pretty average, so stick with the beef or a dog. Also putting them ahead of Steak and Shake & Winstead's: custard! Oh yeah, I guess Culver's is another obvious comparison: but you should just forget that place exists. There's no need for it anymore.

    (5)
  • Layne E.

I prefer Winstead's, mostly because their shakes taste better. Otherwise, it's kind of like Steak and Shake, but the fries aren't as good. There is nothing wrong with Freddy's, and they're close by, so I'll go again, but if I really wanted a burger, I'd drive elsewhere.

I was debating a two star review for this, but maybe I thought it was just my own personal taste that led to that view. I was here on a Sunday right at the peak of lunch. This place was packed, with people waiting in line and then waiting to find an open table. I got the basic combo that included a burger, fries and drink. Well, thank baby Jesus that the drink came with it because there was enough salt on the burger and fries to shrink a slug. Overall, the taste of the burger was good, but there was so much salt on the meat and fries that it was somewhat hard to enjoy.

Yesterday I visited Freddy's on my tour of Lawrence eateries specializing in hamburgers, or in this case steakburgers. I've always been a bit leery of steakburgers because I've never been a fan of Winsteads. Freddy's makes eating a steakburger OK again. I was torn upon arriving between getting a steakburger or one of their hot dogs. Thankfully the Freddy's marketing department cares about people like me and offers the #4, which consists of a hot dog and a steakburger. The staff was very friendly and helpful, making sure to offer a variety on condiments to have on my meal. We sat in a gigantic booth that could easily seat six people. Unfortunately they have huge air conditioning vents positioned right over the tables, making me feel like I was in a meat locker. My food was ready in less than 5 minutes. The steakburger was perfectly cooked and topped with onions, pickles and mustard. The onion and pickle were fresh, cool and crisp and that really helped make the steakburger as good as it was. The hot dog was also good. Your typical Vienna style dog, served on a toasted bun. My meal came with shoestring fries which I always prefer over larger fries that never seem to be properly cooked at other restaurants. It was nice seeing they also had a drive-thru, because if I wanted a decent burger in Lawrence without getting out of my car, Freddy's would definitely be a top option.

Freddy's actually impressed me. It's hard to believe that a burger/shake/fries joint like this is not just another sad copy cat of steak n shake. Since it was located a couple miles from Culver's, I was wondering what was so different about this place. First, the building is large and spacious and super squeaky clean. Loved that part. There was an overabundance of hipster teenagers working behind the counter. I think they were there just to let people know, hey this place is hip, we have hipsters here. Maybe not. Anyway, the large number of workers was a bit odd, as most of them were just standing behind the counter. I ordered the Freddy California style burger and fries. The aforementioned California style means the sauce on the burger. The burger was the thin style as you would expect from a steak burger joint. However, the sauce was undetectable, therefore I could not give it five stars. It hinted toward a thousand island and/or ranch concoction of sorts. The fries were amazing. Freddy's mimics the In and Out Burger style of thinly cut crispy fries with plenty to share. Overall, this joint is pretty hip as far as the atmosphere and the food is tasty and fresh. As for the sauce and the hipsters, I'll have to try them both again next time and see which one I like better.

Just opened today. Chili cheese dog, fries and fountain soda. OK value, not a huge fan of the shoestring fries, chili dog good, like the new england style toasted bun.

With the venerable Winstead's serving up steakburgers since 1940, Freddy's has some stiff competition in Kansas City. While Winstead's is basically a diner, Freddy's has more of a fast food vibe. Most of the sandwiches are available in a combo; and the order taker working the drive-up window dutifully tried to upsell. The patty melt was good, with grilled onions and swiss cheese served up on toasted rye bread (extra points for authenticity). Even though it's technically a double, those of you who are familiar with steakburgers will know we're not talking about typical patties. It was just the right amount of meat. Unfortunately, one of our cheeseburgers didn't have any cheese. Hopefully, this is just startup jitters and not indicative of a trend.

I was excited for this place when I saw it was opening, had seen some reviews from people comparing their California Style burger to In-N-Out. Whomever said that needs to have their taste buds tested out because this is no where close to In-N-Out quality. The food really isn't that bad, just doesn't blow me away and there's better alternatives in the area.

Shame on me for not trying the steakburger, I guess. I headed to Freddy's because I have been meaning try it since I saw that it was opening. When I got there, I went the drive-thru route. (It's way too cold to have to get out of the car more than I absolutely have to.) The drive-thru line was actually pretty full, which says to me: "Lots of people like Freddy's. This is a good sign." Psychologically, I know that this is wrong. The line could be full of people who don't know a hamburger from a banana. I assume these people know something I don't, but they could be just as dumb. I decided to get a Chicago Dog, and like Raquel, I thought it was okay. Smashburger's is better. I got a dirt'n'worms concrete as well, and again, it was good, but nothing I couldn't get at Sheridan's or somewhere else like it. There was nothing special about it. If the husband wants to go to try it, I'd go with him, but otherwise I wouldn't need to make a special trip out there again.

Not bad my good friend, not bad ;) Came here for lunch on Sunday and will definetely come back! I will admit I didnt want to eat here, but my daughter talked to me into it. I had the Chicago style hot dog meal and my daughter had the cheeseburger meal. the average price of the meals were approx. $4.50 The Chicago "style" hot dog was a good attempt, but not quite like the real deal. My daughter loved her cheeseburger (but like i said before she will eat anything) The only thing i didnt care for were the tiny toothpick size french fries, I like me some thick french fries! (thats obviously a personal preference) The interior was very clean and the all the kids that work there were very friendly. I love the old soda shop decor they have in there. ---That is all

Burgers
